Delve into the heart of Peru's Amazon Rainforest on this extension trip to the Tambopata Reserve. The area is home to over 1,000 species of butterflies, 100 mammal species and 600 types of birds, making it one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Explore by night and day, on foot, by canoe and from the treetop canopies, then, fall to sleep to the sounds of the rainforest at one of our lodges.

Budgeting and packing

Clothing

Expect warm and humid conditions. However there may also be heavy rain showers. (It tends to be cooler and drier between May and October, the winter)

Bring light clothing (cotton or wicking material) - Long sleeve shirts and long trousers are best when walking through jungle, and a light weight rainjacket. It is worth also bringing some warmer clothes, particularly between May and September, in case of cool weather.

Footwear

Walking shoes or boots are useful. Trainers are fine, but they should be something that you won't mind getting muddy.

Luggage

20kg

Luggage: On tour

Due to limited space on the boats your luggage will be limited to 10 kilos - your main bag will be left locked up in Puerto Maldonado while you stay at your Amazon Lodge. If you are coming from one of our trekking trips you can re-pack your red Explore trek bag that will be provided to you before departing Cusco. Joining from our other trips you will have time to re-pack before departing on the boat. You will need to pack enough for four days including clothes, toiletries, shoes, torch, sun cream and insect repellent. It is recommended you bring lockable bags.

Equipment

For your jungle experience bring:
Sun cream, sunhat and sunglasses
Jungle formula insect repellent
Good torch and spare batteries for night walks and when the generator is not on
Small backpack for walks and boat trips
Good camera with zoom, spare battery and memory cards
Binoculars (optional)

Tipping

Local crew
Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognized part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided.

Accordingly, you should allow US$ 30, approx. 115 Soles for tipping the lodge guides.

Accommodation notes

We have two different accommodation options available - our comfortable lodge is the Inkaterra Field Station and the premium lodge is the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. Both lodges are built within the Tambopata National Reserve of virgin tropical rainforest.

The Field Station was originally set up as a research centre for scientists and has now opened its doors for travellers to experience the Amazon rainforest. The Field Station is run by, and is the headquarters for, the Inkaterra Association, an NGO dedicated to supporting fieldwork, biodiversity research and conservation. Note that when there is no availability at the Field Station, we may also use the Ecoamazonia Lodge or the Corto Maltes Lodge. Both of these lodges offer wonderful accommodation right in the heart of the rainforest, to the same standard as the Field Station.

The premium-graded Hacienda Concepcion is built in a former cacao and rubber plantation, on the grounds of what was once an Amazon Catholic medical mission centre. The lodge is located in an enchanting setting within 819 hectares of natural rainforest on the shore of the vast Madre de Dios River.

Each lodge has traditional thatched communal and dining areas, with views into the forest. The rooms and cabanas are a short walk away, also built in local wood and thatch, blending in with the surrounding forest. Each has an outdoor terrace with seating, furnished with crafted wooden furniture and en-suite bathrooms with running water, showers and flushing toilets. There's also a safety box for storing valuables and food, mosquito nets for the beds (which are off the floor) and ceiling fans. Electricity is provided by a generator twice a day so Wi-Fi and room lights can be used, batteries charged, etc. but a strong torch is also required.

The main difference in the lodges is in the standard of the furnishings. The Hacienda Concepcion is furnished to a much higher standard. In addition, hot water at the Field Station is sporadic - showers are occasionally lukewarm; perfectly suited to the humid environment.

Meals are all included during your stay and combine delicious local produce; lunch and dinner are served in the communal area self-serve style. Boiled, filtered drinking water is also available at all times, as is tea and coffee. Fruit juices are provided with breakfast, and beers, Pisco and soft drinks are also available to buy at the bar.

Please note that if the Inkaterra Field Station is not available for your stay, we'll offer you a different hotel. In that case, the itinerary will change from the published itinerary on our website. Each hotel offers a distinct Amazon experience depending on its own amenities and surroundings. Importantly, the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway is only included when staying at the Field Station. If the Premium-graded Hacienda Concepcion is not available, we are not able to offer a suitable alternative but there is always the option to book into one of our comfortable graded lodges.
